Improving the 4' x 9' raised bed

First of all, let me clarify something for my readers. I am divorced, and only have Jude in my life now. Yes it's sad, but in the end is just how things are supposed to be, I reckon. :)

Now, for some gardening stuff...... Instead of increasing the size of the garden to make things better, I've been working on making things more efficient, and manageable. Besides, I already have more than I can take care of when the peak of summer arrives. One thing I've learned from the past, is that a deeper garden is always better. So, the 4x9 box next to the woods was the last remaining raised bed to be made deeper, and is now at 11".

Of course my buddy Jude is always eager to help, and her dirty nose clearly shows that she's been after the moles again. Ha. All I have to do now is point to a spot on the ground, and she starts sniffing for moles. God, I sure do love that dog....

I just wish she could zero in on the varmints instead of just digging endlessly. She's ripping the yard a new one - that's for sure...

In closing, I'd like to thank all of my online friends for visiting my little place on the web. It's because of you that I am compelled to share what goes on around here, because we share common ground with this backyard passion of ours. No one here ever understood what all of the excitement was about - but you all do, and always will. :) EG

Hmmm... how did you learn that a deeper bed is always better? I have been thinking of making mine a bit deeper too, but would like to know that it will make a big difference!

EG - So sorry to hear of your circumstance. The path can't have been easy, but we're all here to cheer you along... :)

Love raised beds, and I agree - the deeper the better. You may be interested in a different type which I've just constructed - a self-watering raised veggie bed. It can be found at: http://ecofootprintsa.blogspot.com/2011/09/sub-irrigated-planters.html

Keep you chin up, spirits high, and please, give Jude a big hug from me

BTW, forgot to say - Jude looks like she's doing a good tilling job for you :)

Sometimes life has a funny (painful) way of taking us where we are supposed to be. Thank goodness you have Jude! My cats were my life saver when my daughter passed......and then there was "The Italian" :) Although it took me more then half my life to find him, I did! And guess what....he gets it! All of it!

Ali - a deeper bed keeps the roots cooler, cuts down on frequency of watering, and provides more surface area for taller plants to make a good stand in.

Dani - I've heard of people making those, but really like my deeper raised beds. I hug Jude several times each day, and wish every reader could meet her in person. She's truly a special dog.

Robin - I can't imagine how difficult it would be to lose a child.I don't know how you do it.

Japanese redneck - sometimes I just look at Jude and can't believe that she is mine. I'm definitely lucky.....

Barbie - thanks, I'll definitely keep posting.

Pegging - what a nice thing to say....thank you.

Wonder If I made my beds deeper or higher I would save my poor back..that's a thought. Keep your chin up there's a brighter day coming..

Mrs. Ginny - I'm sure it would - especially if made high enough to sit on a stool to tend to it. I sure hope brighter days are coming, because there's been enough dark ones lately...

That new deeper bed looks great. I hope Jude leaves you a bit of lawn to enjoy too :)

Love the deeper beds. I've noticed a difference with them as well. Chin up, EG.

Mrs. Pickles - it's ok, I figure if Jude doesn't tear the yard up, the armadillos will.

Ribbit - it's difficult at times, but I'm a warrior....

I just discovered you blog by following someone who came to my blog and then to their blog and then here, you know how it works, ha. I'm glad I did find it, tons of great information here. I am hoping to start building our raised beds soon, so I can get them "ready" for next Spring. Lots of inspiration here, I appreciate it.

Oh, and keep you chin up, it gets better.

Thanks for sharing all of your knowledge!

Some people don't get gardening and they never will. Those who are passionate about it are good eggs. I'm currently going through a tough time in my life too, and gardening has helped me more than I could ever imagine. Stick with what makes you happy! Here's to better and brighter days!

EG, I, too, am very glad you are back! I was worried when I saw the post where you "signed off" for a while. Glad to see you are powering through the tough times. Glad you have Jude and your garden to get you through! Hopefully that "hot female gardener" will show up one of these days soon! ;)
