Last ditch effort

Cooler days have arrived, and evenings in the garden are actually pleasant for a change. Jude is enjoying the temperatures too, and requires much more time playing Frisbee until tired. Not much is left in the garden these days, but it's possible to get another round of squash in before frost arrives later. One thing that always makes me smile is volunteer tomato seedlings that always sprout from seeds that find their way into the soil.

Here's a zucchini plant that was started amongst the late round of corn a few weeks ago. It's got a legitimate shot at producing something before late October, and is doing quite well in the swc.

See this little stinker below? It's a volunteer that sprouted in the main raised bed, and was carefully relocated here. I'm thinking it's yellow crookneck, but will have to wait and see...

Below are the pear peelings left from making the pear butter the other day. They're a great addition to the compost piles, and we'll get this batch heated back up in a few weeks. I really look forward to tending to the piles over the cold months, because it keeps me busy during the off-season.

In other news, the new trellises are coming along nicely. Cooler temps have allowed me to work on the project in the evenings after work, and I'll put together the blog post on it when finished. Due to having to use my phone for everything now, every picture has to be uploaded at the same time. I'm thinking around 20 pictures should do it, hopefully.

Also, if I haven't visited anyone's blog lately, it's not because I don't want to. Circumstances in my life right now leave less time to do so, and taking care of my own blog is even difficult. Sorry....

Take care, and happy gardening

EG

Bummer that life is too stressful and full right now. Hope things simmer down soon. Looking forward to seeing your trellis project post. I'm glad your weather has cooled off some.

Every time I'm jealous of your compost, I remember that you put in lots more time than I do with mine. Good compost, lucky soil!!

EG, it is extremely difficult to manage work, the garden, your family and friend time and every thing else that comes up just living. Blogs take more time than a person realizes until they try to manage one him or herself. We truly enjoy your posts and don't mind if we have to wait a little for a post! That said . . . can't wait to see your new garden project! :-)

I'm looking forward to seeing what the trellis for keeping corn from falling over will look like. Keeping the corn standing (through MOST storms) isn't all that hard when it's in the ground -- you just push soil up around the stalks as they grow -- but the water in an SWC isn't going to "mound up" very well! Hope the construction goes well.

I also started 3 zucchini plants for the fall. I'm hoping we get some zukes to freeze. We had 5 plants but didn't get enough zukes to grow. Maybe I should devote 2 beds next year.

EG, I hope you will be feeling better real soon.

Your blog is an inspiration to me; I built my first SWC based on directions in your blog. I love that your directions don't require any power tools (that I don't have), or any weird items that I'd never be able to find.

I have wintersown cardinal flower blooming in that SWC right now. I will try and get outside tomorrow and take a picture for you. No need to reply, just hope it helps you feel better.

I can't comment above, so I will comment down here......hang in there EG, I don't know what you are struggling with, but it is obviously something powerful. I will say a prayer for you, and hope to hear you are doing better in the future.

I, too, will be praying for you. I sense you are really struggling and need encouragement, prayer, and healing. I really enjoy your blog, but don't think I've ever commented. You have lots of people like me, I'm sure!
Blessings to you,
Karen
