Margie - welcome, and thanks for following the blog.
I'm sure glad the 4th is finally over, because my belly can't take much more eating like that...whew! Gosh, there was food everywhere, and 4 things were actually used from the garden this year. Blackberries, tomatoes, onions, and corn made contributions, and I just had to show you the Peaches and Cream corn that was grilled...Yummy...My friend Kris in Georgia can certainly relate, because his crop was fabulous this year!
In current gardening news, melon vines are running along the entire length (24 ft.) of the trellises next to the blackberry patch, and a few more melons are beginning to set fruit along the way. It's about time....sheesh! The vine in the forefront is Honeydew, and fruitset has been found on at least 2 or 3 so far....
Photo below - ever feel like you're being watched while tending to the garden alone? I do - especially since sticking some googly eyes on a few suspended watermelons...Ha! Hey, I get bored sometimes....
Photo below - Honeydew melon #2 is plumping up nicely, and I hope to have several of these to eat later. I can't emphasize just how good this "Cool Green" variety is when grown correctly. It's without a doubt the most impressive melon ever grown in this garden....
Photo below - here's honeydew melon #1, and at least 10 lbs. at this stage, I bet. With about 2 more weeks to go before time to cut into it, I can't help but be just a little bit pumped!
In other melon news, the number of actual melons sizing up in the garden now is at 19. Of those, at least 7 or 8 will weigh in at around 10 lbs. or better at this point. The heaviest will probably be either honeydew melon #1, or the moon and stars with the googly eyes in the picture above. Either one could weigh somewhere between 15 and 20 lbs. I figure, but won't know until harvest time....
Also, Congo finally has some fruitset now, and it's better late than never, I suppose.
Lastly, Mrs. EG really enjoyed interacting with those that left comments for the cobbler post, and has decided to do more cooking posts in the near future. She's a really good cook, and I look forward to it. Who knows - there might even be a video of her and I together at some point, but we'll just have to wait and see...
Take care, and happy gardening
EG

LOL, love the googly eyes!
My honeydew bloomed but didn't set any fruit....
Glad your garden is doing so good.
That's some mighty good looking corn you have there!
Mrs EG needs to put you to work helping her in the kitchen (learn how to wash dishes) if you have nothing else to do and call yourself bored, and spend time putting eyes on those melons,:o)..Maybe you have too many melons while some people (like me) have none.:o(
Those melons look great! Corn isn't too shabby either. You're looking like you've got a great year going.
A 15 to 20 pound melon! Wow!!!!
Your vines are sure looking good! Love the melon with the wiggly eyes!
Drooling over your corn! Our corn here is on avg about knee high... no 4th of July corn for Wyoming folks!
I missed Mrs EG's cobbler post! Going to read it right now!
Your melons are sizing up well! What kind of trellis do you have and how many plants do you grow on each trellis?
I have a nylon trellis - 4' X 10' tied to wooden frame on the sides of raised bed. I have 5 butternut squash plants growing on it(starting to vine at this point). Since this is my first time growing this squash, my question is how big do these vines grow and if my trellis is good enough? Thanks!
Awesome melons EG!
Erin - I'm glad you liked them. :)
Japanese Redneck - sounds like you have a pollination issue - I'm sorry...
Gingerbreadshouse7 - oh believe me, I know exactly what house cleaning is all about, and just hate doing it...besides - my garden needs me...lol.
Ribbit - thank you, it's been a really good year indeed....
Toni - yep, and there's at least 100 lbs. Total right now. The second batch of corn is knee high already, too!
Randomgardener - thanks, I'm pretty happy with them so far. My trellises are wire mesh, 2x4's, and 4x4 vertical posts. Only one plant is grown on each side, and I really can't comment on the effectiveness of your setup (never used it before)
The butternut will completely engulf your trellis in no time, and 2 or 3 plants would be more practical.
Melissa - thanks, I'm glad you liked them!
Oh you make me laugh EG. Now I need some googly eyes for my melons. They won't get nearly as big as yours. I'll be lucky to get a 6lb melon. 4 lbs is probably more like it. But then I have to grow the kind that can handle our cooler shorter season.
EG question... what size wire mesh are you using on your trellises?
I've been using nylon the past couple years, but feel that I'm ready for a more sturdy trellis. The nylon doesn't really stand up well to storage.
You know I love that corn picture, it looks really great. I used some of my peaches and cream in a low country boil cookout for the fourth too.
I like the eyes on the melon, it reminds me of the Geico commercials..."I always feel like, somebody's watching meeeeeee!!!"
Maybe it will keep the pests away from the garden since someone is watching, haha.
The corn looks delicious! The googly eyes are so cute and fun! It would be really funny if you put eyes on all your melons...
Ha ha. Love the googly eyes.
Daphne - I'm glad you thought it was funny..I can just imagine how hard it is to grow melons where you live. I wish you good luck!
Toni - the mesh has 2" x 3" openings, and will easily support melons up to 20 lbs.
Kris - I'm glad you approve of the corn photo. Thankfully, there's lots more in the freezer...
Charmcitybalconygarden - that would be a lot of googly eyes!
Eleanor - I'm glad you liked them. :)
Look at then melons! Those googly eyes are hysterical.
