Is anyone having trouble leaving comments for others? I went to Connor's blog to comment on the nice smallmouth bass he caught, and it kept making me sign in to leave a comment....weird.
Although the lack of rain and daily temps have been a problem in the garden, the tomatoes continue to do well despite the conditions. Very little blossom end rot has surfaced, and most plants have several tomatoes on them (some are pretty big, actually). No disease to be seen either, and that's always a very good thing...Anyway, I wanted to show some pictures of the plants, so here we go......
Photo below - Here's the brandywine, cherokee purple, white tomesol, rutgers, and red siberian. No fruitset as of yet on the black brandywine, but the plant looks really good at this point.
Photo below - here's the black from tula, paul robeson, and cherokee chocolate all growing in the 34 gallon swc at the end of the corn planting.
Photo below - and here's a shot of the whole swc area....the corn is at least 6 ft. tall, and ears continue to plump up larger. Due to the slope of the land and concealment by the 4ft. x 25ft raised bed, people driving by can't see this planting from the road. That's great, too - because I don't need people stopping by to ask questions about it. I have too much to do around here for that to take place.....
Photo below - Yeah, I built another swp from cat litter buckets....20 plants just sounds better than 19, and this new addition was planted with a black brandywine sucker that was rooted a few weeks ago. In my eagerness to get it out there, the plant almost died from being exposed to the full sun too early. I should've known better, but thankfully it's gonna make it since top-watering is being performed twice a day....
In other tomato news, the first ripe tomato of the year will be picked before the weekend arrives, and of course will be from one of the Stupice plants. Due to their small size though, a tomato sandwich will be out of the question..
Also, the rain barrels are completely empty now, and everything has to be watered by city water now. I sure do hate that, but realize that this year's weather has been anything but normal...
Take care, and happy gardening
EG

Your tomatoes look great! I have tons of fruit set, but nothing looks to be turning color any time soon, let alone before the weekend! Very exciting for you.
I'm in awe how far behind we are..my toms are just starting to bloom.
Everything looks fantastic!
Your tomatoes are HUGE! Looks like you are going to have an excellent crop this year! Sorry to hear you've got to use city water... I bet rain barrels are incredibly nice on the water bill! Can't wait to hear how great the first tomato of the year is!
We are in a severe drought now, it's definitely not a good year. The tomato plants all look fantastic!
I could see three tomatoes in your first photos :o) I have some nice blooms on all of mine, hope they do better than my garlic. I like your Corn buckets, it's a nea idea and If I can get some buckets cheap I'm going to try that one too :o)..
Yes, on certain sites I have been unable to leave comments at all.
The tomatoes look great.
Am just getting back from being off most of the 2 past weeks.
Lucky you! A tomato already! They look great. Mine are still small, and all I have is flowers.
Lots of people having trouble with blogger: uncheck the *stay signed in* box when leaving a comment..that worked for me.
Love your containers: I can't believe you can grow corn in them!
ribbit - thank you, it's a good grow cycle so far...
samantha - aw shucks, it's really nothing. I was just able to get a jump on things is all...
Megan - thank you. The tallest tomato plant is about 7ft., but only has one tomato on it so far...
Erin - it's definitely a strange year for gardening...
Gingerbreadshouse7 - in all, there's probably fruitset on at least 75 tomatoes, and it'll be interesting when things start to mature.
Japanese Redneck - thanks, it's a pretty good season so far...
alison - thanks, no health issues with the plants so far....
Lynda - ok, thanks - i'll try that...sure, you can grow all kinds of things in swc's...
Your plants in the SWC look so good and healthy. My plants have had lots of flowers but still very little fruit. It has been so hot and dry the last week that the flowers just dry up. (sigh)
I had that awful blogger sign in problem too. 2 things solve it for me. 1. uncheck 'keep me signed in' when you log in. 2. get google chrome and go to blogger via google chrome.
Debbie - it's a challenge to get fruitset right now, due to the excessive temperatures...
Matron - thanks for the tip....
Your garden is massive already! Looks great.
All your plants look great!
We need a summer cold front to come through.....wishful thinking.
Looking Good and it's awesome how many varieties you're growing! Very nice
I keep thinking I need an early tomato some year. I would kill for a tomato from the garden. I cheated and bought some from the farmers market. They grow them in greenhouses. Your tomatoes are looking really good. I'm wondering if I went overboard with 21.
