With everything but the sweet potatoes planted in the garden finally, time can be spent addressing the plants' needs, and pulling the occasional weed that has germinated in the garden. On average, i'd say only 2 or 3 show up each day - and really stick out like a sore thumb amongst the flawless soil surface. That's probably the best thing about my garden - as it's a pleasure to keep maintained.
Anyway, I wanted to show you some progress photos of things in the garden - but first is the tomato transplants that'll be sold to friends at work....Not too bad, I guess - but could really use another potting up.
Photo below - here's the main raised bed with most things doing quite well. That 4x4 section to the right is where the sweet potatoes will be grown, and it's certainly gonna be a change from the containers used over the past 2 years. Things look pretty naked right now, but will become a jungle of growth in less than 2 months...
Photo below - most of the onions are producing bulbs, but a couple have already begun to go to seed....In hopes of getting some adequate bulbs this time, i've been fertilizing them like crazy.....
Photo below - here's the swc/swp section planted with corn and tomatoes, and I need to remember to remove the pieces of cloth from that front trellis that are leftover from last year....sheeh....Due to improving the drainage characteristics of the soil mixture in each, i'm gonna go without plastic mulch this time around...
In other news, I hope to have the centerpiece for the flowerbed completed by the weekend. Talk about a complex project...whew..It's gonna be beautiful, but definitely one of the most challenging things ever constructed by myself...
Also, i'm still waiting for the okra to germinate. Hopefully it will soon, because it takes quite some time before pods begin forming...
Take care, and happy gardening
EG

I am intrigued, can't wait to see it!
Lucky you to have everthing in the garden! I still have a few weeks left of doing the seedling shuffle.
Do you think that the high temps you had made the onions start to go to seed? I have not had good luck with my onions the past two years.
Looking good EG! Your garden is definitely way ahead of us here in the Northeast. I can't believe your onions are forming bulbs already. I haven't even planted my sets yet! It sounds like this has been a warm spring in your neck of the woods.
Lookin' good, EG! Of course, I expect that from you by now. Hey, I've been cutting strings and cloth ties from just about everything, too! I think it takes longer to remove all that stuff than it did to tie them on.
That's awesome! I'm not close to getting everything in my garden.
As for fun maintenance, keep saying that as you go out with a flashlight at midnight on a Tuesday to squish bugs with your fingers... hehe.
Everything is looking wonderfully encouraging..I like that box with all the extra posts in it...I think it's great,
I think those large containers are good too..I saved a lot of seeds that I'm hoping will do well for me...Have a blessed day...
Gardening and yard work is sometimes too much fun. I had to take a day off to recuperate from the weekend fun!
Do I spy a couple of grape vines in between your beds? We're going into season three with our two Reliance vines. I've been reading up on pruning them to encourage fruit production. Just wondering if you do anything special or just let them grow. They appear to be quite long.
Here's an update from last summer (http://www.media-organic.com/grapes-update-2). Being in Massachusetts we won't see them begin to leaf out for a few more weeks.
Thanks to your inspiration we will be doing some vertical gardening this season, most certainly our pickling cukes and possibly sugar baby watermelons.
I'm jealous of the space you have.
Below you were talking about just one tomato per 18 gal SWC. What are your thoughts on one tomato and one basil plant per 18 gallon SWC I plan on doing this year? I may be pushing it as the tomato is a cherokee purple but I push it anyway. Thanks.
Thanks, everyone....
Sinfonian - sigh...yes, we have TONS of bugs down here - but you already knew that..
MediaOrganic - yes, I have 3 muscadine grape vines, and only let them grow as long as their respective trellis..
Mark - lots of people plant 2 indeterminate tomato plants in an 18 gallon swc with excellent results, but it's just my preference to only plant 1 because I already have more than enough plants in the garden....You'll be just fine with your planting...
Great looking garden, I am next door in Georgia in Zone 8. Since you love trellising, do you grow snow peas? I have become hooked on growing them in my square foot garden, but I have to plant them early because of the heat. Look forward to following your blog.
Mine is at:

It looks great. Can't you just imagine all the plants growing tall. I can't wait for my plants to grow.
