Hoping the cauliflower doesn't bolt

Sara - welcome, and thanks for following my blog....

So much rain has fallen as of late around here, that it really isn't funny anymore...The rain barrels are completely filled, and the garden could really use a break from the excessive water. Although the fruit trees and lawn are appreciative of it - the garden is not...Oh well, that's typical of what April usually brings each year.
At least the cauliflower is liking it, and I just hope that a head forms before warmer weather causes it to bolt to seed...

Photo below - here's the carrots before they were pulled the other day. They were really big, but the taste was less than anticipated. Maybe carrots just aren't suited for the climate in the deep south....

Photo below - here's a couple of japanese maple trees that overwintered inside the greenhouse, and one will need to be removed pretty soon. Hopefully it can be saved, because both look pretty good at this stage of growth...I'll try to gently separate them - in hopes of keeping both intact.

Photo below - speaking of jap maples, here's some newborn babies that'll be potted up in some 3 gallon containers pretty soon. They are the bloodgood variety - which get really big when fully grown. I really like jap maples, and think they're a good addition to any landscape...

In other news, it's gonna be 34 degrees tonight, and hopefully that'll be the last time the stuff in the garden has to experience less than ideal nightly temperatures. It's kinda like "the winter that just won't go away"....All I know, is that i'm ready for warmer weather.

Take care, and happy gardening

EG

It definitely seems like the winter that just won't go away!!

I hope that it stays cool enough for your cauliflower and doesn't go straight into summer!

We're going down to freezing also tonight. Thinking about sticking some straw over the more fragile things and hoping for the best.

Carrots do better for me when I plant them in July - but I've never gotten cauliflower to work a bit.

Wow, your cauliflower is looking great! I'm afraid I will have to stick to fall for those, my broccoli and cauliflower are still so small out there and they need to vacate the beds pretty soon to make way for my spring and summer stuff, I wish I could plant them out a month earlier here. I hope you get heads very soon!

I have several Japanese Maples. 2 of ours died over the winter and I don't understand it cause they were pretty large....

Looking good! Do you do a summer planting for a fall harvest as well? Just curious.
Enjoy your blog and info!

Wow, your cauliflower plant looks so leafy and healthy! What do you fertilize it with?

Robin - i'm sure the cauliflower will bolt, but just had to try..

ribbit - If it doesn't do well with this one, I might try it again in the fall.

Erin - thank you

Japanese Redneck - that is certainly weird....

wvhiker - I try to do just that each year, but last year's crop didn't do too well.

RandomGardener - thanks, I just use some Gardentone fertilizer..

We finally had a good amount of rain. 1.4 inches since the beginning of April. March only had two which is less than half of normal, so the rain for us was pretty welcome. Now the few plants I have outside are happy again.

I'm ready for winter to go away too! I wish I knew someone who grows those Japanese maples around here! I just saw some at a nursery... $50 a piece. Granted, they are about 3 feet tall, but still...
