Whew....working 10 hours, then going home and being called back into work for another 14 hours after only 2 hours of sleep can be pretty rough! Thankfully though, it doesn't happen that often......Anyway, let's do some gardening stuff.....
So, I had these old seeds laying around with nowhere to start them....I mean, the propagation systems are filled with seedlings - so what's a gardener to do in this situation? Wintersow them, of course.....If this method is news to your ears, then you can get all the information about it from wintersown.org, and also over at Tom's Blog - where he wintersows TONS of stuff each year......
Anyway, i'm certainly not the best at it, but it's quite easy once you understand how to do it....These recycled coke bottles were sown with Early Girl tomatoes, and should germinate hopefully in another week or so....
Photo below - In other news - check out the rhubarb! It's over-wintered great, and looks like we'll finally get to try some rhubarb pie for the first time later this year....I've heard it's really good. Anyway, although the compost within the container has settled quite a bit over the past year, it's still around 20-25 gallons of medium to grow in.....
Since removing the carrots growing in windowbox planters have been removed from the greenhouse, they've really took off....Using a finger to probe the growth under the soil, it's apparent that the carrots are pretty nice sized, too! I'll let the neieces pull them the next time they're over, and imagine it'll be fun for them....
In other news, 4 more swp's/swc's have been added to the existing ones in the garden, and very little work needs to be done to have them ready for planting later. Fertilizer, plastic mulch, and of course plants in them in about 2 weeks will finally kick off the gardening extravaganza once again.
Well, that's about it for today....Take care, and happy gardening

Boy those carrots look amazing!! The girls will have a great time harvesting those babies!!
I'm going to plant some carrots in big pots that I have here at the house and see how they do.
Take it easy and happy gardening!!
I'll have to check into that winter sowing.
Get some rest. I know the DST is going to be the death of me. I've ended up in the flower beds for a couple of hours then still have horse chores.
EEK! 24 hours in two days, that's insane! Hope you recover quickly!
As for the wintersowing, I've had containers saved for it, just haven't done it. I do so much inside I just forget. Thanks. I love wintersown.org great folks!
Lastly, just a plug... Yuck! Early Girl is Monsanto!!!! I am so happy I found another early producing tomato that does well in my area to replace it as I won't put any more money in their pockets than I need to (I bet this computer paid them somehow).
Great post man! Get some rest!
Oh wow, I don't know how you can function on only 2 hours sleep.
Your rhubarb made me smile. When I was a child we had some growing at the edge of one of our large garden plots. We would often dip the stems into a cup of sugar and eat them as a treat.
Robin - thanks, I can't wait to try them!
Japanese Redneck - try it - you'll like it...
Sinfonian - yeah, work can be pretty demanding at times....
grafixmuse - it's pretty difficult, and always takes a couple of night's sleep to get back to normal. Mmmm...I bet rhubarb dipped in sugar tastes great!
Winter sowing of tomatoes. Never thought that would be possible. Do keep us informed about the germination.
Your working hours sound like a nightmare. Hope the gardening stuff gave you some much needed energy.
Wow! Look at those carrots! I can never do spring carrots, only fall works for me.
I just stuck some tomato seeds in some regular cell packs without covers or anything several weeks ago and they've all come up perfectly after weeks of nothingness. Amazing how they just 'know' when to sprout.
Rhubarb, yum! My grandma always had some; she made the most amazing strawberry rhubarb pie! You're gonna love it!!!
Sorry - How do you do the wintersowing of tomatoes? Your carrots look great. Did you seed them indoors and how many are in there? I usually plant them outdoors directly when the soil warms up.
This is the first year I've tried wintersowing. I hope it works as well as people say.
RandomGardener - just go to Trudi's website wintersown.org, and it shows everything you need to know about doing it correctly. I really don't know how many carrots are in there....
Every time the kids empty a 2 liter, I look at it and think that I should try the wintersowing but didn't know how to get started. Thanks for posting the link. Your carrots look wonderful. I would love to see the expressions on their faces when they harvest the carrots!!!
