My garden is "nekkid" - well, except for the broccoli in the swp's, that is...Things sure do look ugly in the garden during this time of year, and it's certainly a big change from the mass of green growth of months past. In a way I hate it, but then again welcome it. The bright side is that no more work is required in there for at least 6 months - now that.. I can handle! However, this of course is where the 4x4 greenhouse will be situated, by anchoring it to the box itself - and will require some daily attention....
Photo below - here's the sweet potato area, and won't use the containers for growing onions this time around. As a matter of fact, I really don't know what to plant in them next year - especially since 2 consecutive crops of sweet potatoes have already been grown in the space. Alot of thought will have to go into this before spring arrives.....Maybe beans? That's a possibility....I bet carrots would do good, too.
Photo below - here's the coldframe without an automatic opener. It will most likely be used as is, unless alot of the other projects come along smoothly. I'm more concerned with the greenhouse right now, and will get more use out of it, anyway. Still, this fella is gonna see some action pretty soon....
Photo below - here's the one that has the cordless drill mounted inside, which automatically opens the lid based on temperature. It'll need to be wired up again in a few weeks, since most of the wiring was removed when relocating it last spring. It's pretty funny watching it do it's own thing. Heh....
Photo below - now let me show you the tires/wheels that will be mounted on each coldframe for carting them around. These little tires will hold up to 300 lbs., and only cost $5.95 each at the freaky merchandise store close to my workplace. What a bargain! The piece of 3/4" rod was purchased there too, and will become the axles for the wheels. Once in place, i'll easily be able to roll the coldframes around on the property - which will make my life just a little bit easier. BTW....that's Jude's nose in the picture...little stinker....
In other news, the frame for the greenhouse is finished, and i'll try to come up with an automatic opener for it over the next few weeks. The initial plan won't work now, since a few complications were figured out before construction started. A small motor with gear assembly from a computer printer will do the opening, but how to utilize it best has yet to be decided. Although challenging - something will come to mind soon, i'm sure.
I'm also probably gonna construct a shelving system inside the greenhouse, so that it can be used to the fullest potential. With all the free space it has as far as height is concerned, it'd be a shame not to get the most out of it. I'm thinking 3 levels - with the shelf being constructed from pvc pipe....
Also, i'm gonna have to do something with all the green tomatoes that were picked the other day. It was 5 gallons worth, and some green salsa just might happen. If any of you have a good recipe for it, i'd love to have it! Well, that's about it for now...I have a big weekend planned for the construction projects, and hope nothing gets in the way.
Take care, and happy gardening!
EG

Ack! A naked garden. My naked garden area doesn't even have a bed to hide in. Its just running around my yard. I bought some of the wood yesterday and I've got to get it together soon.
The eternal hope in a garden--clean beds to plan new plantings!
You greenhouse sounds like it will be great. I'll check in on the construction.
Try green tomato relish, it is so good. You can find recipes on the net.
That is pretty darn cool that your cold frame opens when it needs to on its own! Very nice!
Man, could I ever use you around my house! My son dropped off about 8 large windows last spring, with big plans to build me a greenhouse. They're still stacked in the garage, and Mr. Granny is getting pretty hot under the collar over them being in the way. One or two of them would make a great cold frame, but I seem to have run out of handymen around here.
My garden is getting nekkider each day ;-)
I love the cold frame. We have that on the list of things to build. We just built some raised beds this weekend for garlic. I think beans would work well where you had sweet potato.
Daphne - so you're fixin' to build some boxes? Cool!
Gardener - oh, please do....it'll be a one of a kind greenhouse...
Peggi - hmm...i'll have to look that up. Some will get pickled, though...
ShawnAnn - thanks!
Granny - if you lived close by, i'd be glad to build them for ya. But I ain't going 2500 miles to build one....heh.
meemsnyc - thanks! I might just have to try the beans there, especially since they've been grown in the same spot 2 years in a row.
