Harvest Monday, August 2nd

Due to all the studying over the last couple of weeks, I missed Harvest Monday last week, of course. However, since the completion of the test, i've had the opportunity to get some photos of a few harvests. Since time has been scarce, the cell phone has been used to get these shots, which turned out ok, I guess.

Photo below - there's no mistaking the brown looking tomatoes - Cherokee Purple, and lots of 'em. The others are Neves Azorean Red, Brandywine, jelly bean, and Black Cherry. Even a little watermelon was harvested, and I ate this little dude by myself. It was just "ok" in flavor....

Photo below - green beans, cucumbers, okra, and jelly bean tomatoes.

Photo below - this harvest was all about the black cherry tomatoes, because they were everywhere.

Photo below - much of the same, as these items have been in abundance for quite some time now.

In other news, the crookneck squash plants aren't producing any more fruit right now, and will probably be pulled sometime this week.
There's more fruitset on watermelons, and a couple are doing really well. While positioning one the other day in its' sling, it fell to the ground and busted. That's ok, Jude ate the whole dang thing. Ha! Gosh, I hope they aren't bad for dogs.....

Another butternut squash has set fruit, and the vines are quickly overtaking the 4x9 box next to the woods. Man...i'm sure glad I tried them in there, because it's working pretty good so far!

The watermelons planted in swc's next to the sweet potatoes are fighting for space, and vines from both are beginning to inter-mingle. One thing's for certain - harvesting will be interesting when the time comes.

Take care, and happy gardening!

EG

Wow, EG! It all looks fantastic.

How was the concert!? I really hope you guys didn't get rained out. We had a few bad storms come through here last night.

Your tomatoes look yummy :) I think that I may grow those black cherry tomatoes next year. They look great. Do they have a good flavor?

Hopefully the next watermelon will be a bit more tastey.

Looks great! I might have to sit out Harvest Monday, it's pouring! But I can see a tomato from where I sit, waiting for me... LOL

Wonderful looking harvests! The farm I get my CSA share from had a tomato tasting yesterday, and asked everyone to write down their 3 favorites...Black Cherry won! There was also Cherokee Purple, which tasted marvelous...

Everything looks so good. I think I am gonna have to try some of those tomato varieties next year. I only have one teeny watermelon growing out there, and it doesn't seem to be getting any bigger! Grrr! Maybe it is the variety, I don't know.

EG, your harvest looks great! What kind of tomatoes are the big ones in the bottom picture? They look HUGE!!

ribbit - thanks. The concert was extremely hot, and it rained a little bit in the evening...

Robin - the most appealing characteristic of the black cherry to me would be texture, not flavor. I think the flavor is overrated, but certainly good.

Erin - thanks, I wish it would rain here!

Momma_S - really? huh. Black cherry is pretty good, but not as good as people make it out to be.

ShawnAnn - I struggle with getting a decent sized melon, too - and the most important factor for size is amount of foliage...

debbie - thank you...Those would be brandywine. It's a staple in my garden....

Ooh, I love the look of the Cherokee Purple! What does it taste like? Is it sweet?

Well, considering I've only been eating straight-up tomatoes for about a month, I couldn't tell you which one was what--unless it was, "this one tastes less tomato-ey than that other one I just tasted." I do remember a distinct taste w/the black cherry, like the skin being tart like the skin of a cherry, but that's about it... Ask me again in a year! ;-)

I see a lot of tomato harvest photos with green or partially green tomatoes, yours included. Do you grow tomatoes that are ripe when they're green, or is there some other reason for it?

Cherokee purple and black cherry. Gotta to remember to try those next year.

Quick question. With the water melons growing in slings, how do you tell when they're ripe?

Engineeredgarden said...

Crystabel - no, she just has to eat everything in sight....

Dan - thanks!

meemsnyc - yes, it is very sweet

momma_s - it's great that you're finally eating tomatoes!

Carrie - tomatoes (mine at least) are picked at first sign of blushing, because they'll ripen just fine on the kitchen counter.

Cheryl - when the tendril closest to the fruit completely withers away, it's supposed to be ready.
