Harvest Monday - August 16th, 2010

Tosha - welcome, and thanks for following the blog!

It was a big week for harvests around here, but I assure you that future harvests won't even be the slightest bit comparable to this one. The reason, is of course due to the heat and bugs, and at least half of the the plants in the garden will be removed over the next week or so...Anyway, here's my harvest for the week.

The beans have been doing absolutely nothing lately, and i'll likely cut all of the vines where they protrude from the ground this week. I always like to let them completely dry onto the trellises, because it makes for easy removal during the winter.
The cucumbers are being damaged by melon worms and pickle worms, so i'll go ahead and get rid of them too. It's just a bad time for the garden right now, and the end is drawing near.
On a positive note, we've had a couple of good rain showers in the last few days that have almost filled the rain barrels up again. Some is being caught in buckets too, just to take full advantage of the rainfall.

The frame for the squirrel trap was constructed over the weekend, and all kinds of possibilities have surfaced for creating a door and trigger mechanism. I can already think of at least 3 different designs, but will try to decide which is best over the next few days.

Take care, and happy gardening!

EG

Well, I see that you are still getting quite a few tomaotes EG. Mine have slowed down quite a bit. I even pulled one of the plants over the weekend.

My pole beans are still not producing as much as they should. I guess that it's the oppressive heat we had. Hopefully they will pick up this week.

Can't wait to see your squirrel trap :)

Beautiful harvest. The pears and big old tomatoes look delicious!

My garden is doing about the same as yours right now... I can't wait until cooler temps make it pleasant to get out there and really assess/remove things and plan for fall. Do you do anything to the beds for insects in between your summer/fall plantings? I was wondering if covering with plastic or anything of the like would help or just be added chores with no results LOL!

My god. How much do those tomatoes weigh?!?

Wish I had a pear tree...

Beautiful harvests. I especially love your pears. I think about growing them, but fire blight is such a pain that I don't bother. Weirdly don't like them fresh as much as I like them canned.

Niiiccceee harvest!! We've only had sun-dried (burnt) tomatoes on the vine from all the heat! LOL

Oooh, are those bartlett pears? Lucky!! It's raining here all day, love it! Rain barrels will be full, finally!

Robin - yeah, they're still producing pretty well, but the quality has diminished drastically.

kelly - thank you. :-)

Erin - i'm planning on using some aggressive pesticide on the plants after all the blooms are pulled off.

Lou - Well, I don't know. The only thing that's been weighed this year was the 19 lb. melon.

Susan - well, plant a couple and you'll have pears in about 5-6 years....

Daphne - thanks, the fireblight isn't too difficult to deal with - just have to stay on top of it.

Stephanie - aw, that's too bad...

meemsnyc - no, those are keifer pears, which are really good for making preserves with...

EG, I just had a "duh" revelation! Thanks! I am pulling the last of the fruits now, so I will give them a good dousing while the bugs are still on them before they get pulled too. Ah, sometimes it's right in front of me but I just can't see... blinded by the bugs I guess!

What a great harvest you pulled off in the middle of all this nasty hot weather. Are all those large heirloom tomatoes supposed to be that color (light pink/purple/green/orange), or are you picking them before they are fully ripe?

Lots of stuff, even at the end of a rotten summer. What do you do with all that okra?

Engineeredgarden said...

thyme2garden - I pull them early, just so the worms can't destroy them.

stefaneener - down here, we fry the heck out of that okra. Mmm..mmm!

Nice harvest EG...it's hard to believe your part of the country is winding down on veggie production and ours is just going into full swing.

Susan - yeah, the end is drawing near for me, but a few things are still producing.

Can't wait to see this squirrel trap, sounds intriguing. The pears look good, what's the plans for them?

Dan - i'm still thinking on it, but should have something put together soon.
