Rooting and pruning tomato suckers

yma, njumpasorn, and katrina - Welcome, and thanks for following my blog!

Anyway, here's a video I made the other day about rooting tomato suckers, and pruning, too! Enjoy!

EG, always learning from you. Thanks for sharing with all of us! Question - Do you always prune by breaking with your hand or do you ever use scissors or small pruners? When is the best time of day to prune or try to root the suckers?

Very informative video! I have also had great success rooting sucker in water. You still have to keep them out of direct sunlight for a little while when transferring them to the garden. But once they become established they grow really fast and can even catch up with earlier pants even in zone 5. I love having "bonus" plants as a backup just in case something happens to the originals.

Thanks for posting this video....maybe next year, I will prune my tomatoes correctly!

debiclegg - i'm glad you found the video helpful. I always use my hands, but a tool of some kind would certainly be better. I don't prune at any specific time of day, and am not aware that it would matter...

rachel - thanks! I tend to get kinda carried away with suckers each year. Ha!

robin - you're welcome!

Hey!

Been checking out your blog for a month or so. Good stuff for sure! Gonna add to you to the few blogs I follow.

I've gotta say I'm a little jealous of your heat and humidity. My plants are tiny compared to yours, but that's the way it goes in Montana! We'll "hit our stride" soon. This June has been unusually cool and rainy. I'm in the Bozeman area.

My blog is mostly about my dogs...but I talk about gardening a lot during the growing season. Your dog is lovely! I've got a white shepherd. He's a real crack up, too!

Keep up the good work! I'm sure learning a lot from your blog.

Best,

-Carolyn

Man, I wish I had watched this yesterday. I finally got around to pruning and tying the tomato plants to the trellis, and there were had quite a few suckers that I trimmed off. Thanks for the video.

Good information about cutting soem of the leaves off the tomotato plant that touch the ground to prevent water splashing up on the plant and spreading diseases. I wonder, can this be done to all plants?

Cheryl - you're welcome. :-)

Hello I found your blog today, and you have quite a few posts that have been helpful for me. This is my first year gardening, and I'm not really sure what I'm doing, just trying to figure out what works this year, I guess. I posted today on what my garden looks like so far. I am wondering if you could take a look at my post and answer some of the questions I had about my plants. It's at www.ecochickapprentice.com Thanks so much!

What a great video, thank you! I'm a complete novice at gardening. Just started a blog to blab about my successes and failures. This will certainly help me with my tomato plants. I didn't know it was best to pull off the little suckers. I certainly didn't know you could root them! How cool is that!??!?!? Thanks :)

That's a great video, everything was as clear as a bell.
This year I grew a lot of tomatoes from seeds I saved.
