We have had so much rain over the past several weeks that many of the plants in the regular garden beds are showing water stress. I can see how the plastic lid creates a holding tank and funnel for the rainwater aggravating an already large rain event by storing and holding even more of it.
Hm, very good point, EG. Live and learn, right? I have no doubt that you will cogitate and ruminate for a while, and come up with a typically ingenious solution. You always do!
Peggi - the cup is filled with soil, so it can wick water up into the mass of growing media above it. I just do one hole for a swc/swp less than 5 gallons.
Thanks for the answer. How many holes for the 18 gallon tote? I was looking at the tutorial and couldn't see where you tell how many holes for that and how big. Love your blog!

Very interesting observation on the SWCs. I can see how that particular covering acts as a giant funnel.
Your dog is tooo funny!

rachel - yeah, it's definitely causing issues with the soil moisture
Jeff - Jude is a really good dog, but she gets in the way sometimes. Heh.
kitsapFG - I just wish the rain would stop, and maybe some soil moisture control could take place.

Hi. I was looking your instructions for SWC's. What do you do with the cup that sucks up the water from the bottom? Do you only do one hole or many?
Thanks
