Anyway, these first ones are Neves Azorean Red, and I just noticed that they look like they have BER....whimper....Gosh, i'm gonna have to go out there and take a closer look, bit it sure looks like it. *After a close inspection of them this morning, no BER to be found. Yay!
Photo below - Brandywine, and thankfully the leaves appear to be free from any diseases. Earlier, lots of leaves were affected with something, and a liberal spraying with copper fungicide took place. Those leaves were removed, then discarded into the woods at least 100 feet from the plants. I'd really like for these to do well this year, because they'll probably become a staple around here. (If not too much trouble)
Photo below - here's an updated picture of the 8 Cherokee Purple plants, which are really beginning to get bushy. I'm ecstatic about this planting - especially because they are really healthy plants. I just knew this box would perform well for them, and can't wait to start harvesting a few. This box will be made 3" deeper once the flowerbed project is finished, as there should be enough scrap pieces leftover for adding at least 1 more layer of timbers. Who knows? I might even build another box when cold weather arrives. Hehe....Shhh....Don't tell my wife!
Photo below - check out these 3 plants growing in the big pile of shredded leaves. Ha! From left to right, we have Stupice, Giant Oxheart (I think), and one of the jelly bean volunteer plants from work. Man, they sure like growing here, and I might just start leaf "farmimg". Hey, it works..
In other news, the 8 tomato plants growing in swc's by the shed are starting to set fruit, too. They are the ones that have herbicide damage - which makes the leaves look really freaky! Only one plant didn't get exposed to it, which is a Giant Oxheart. As you can imagine, that particular swc is using alot more water than the others.
Also, The jelly bean tomatoes growing in 4 gallon swp's that have set fruit like crazy already are experiencing some problems now. I just don't understand it - the leaves are lush and green, but the top growth is drooping....Gosh, I hope it isn't a wilt of some kind!
Take care, and happy gardening!
EG

Oh look at all those tomatoes. I love the box with all the Cherokee Purple plants.
I've heard of hay gardens, but not leaf gardens before, but then tomatoes sometimes like to grow in the weirdest places.
I can't wait to try these cherokee purple! Mine are still green, but the green is getting very dark on the shoulders. I think they may just be about to turn color!
I'm glad it wasn't BER. That would have been a major buzz kill. It sounds like everyone's tomato plants are doing well this year. Hopefully, the weather will continue to cooperate.
Wow you have tomatoes! I hope they all stay healthy and produce well. Do you worry the volunteers could harbor some disease?
i'm sooooooooooo drooling!!! i have a few small tomatoes that are swelling nicely... the weather here in the pacific northwest hasn't been kind to hot weather crops but i've been babying them along and hope for the best in july or august....i hope your tomatoes suffer no wilt, ber or herbacide damage... sighhhh
That top growth drooping and eventual death is what happened to all my tomatoes last year, when I grew them in the 5-gallon SWPs. I'll bet you find the same thing I did, that they become completely root bound in the buckets. They start out big, lush, the first to bear fruit....then wham, they're goners.
They look really great. You are growing a lot of varieties that I've been wanting to try. Have you tried the jelly bean tomato? How is it? That's one I have seeds for and am thinking about growing for the fall.
Daphne - thanks, the CP box is doing great!
ribbit - yeah, it sounds like it's about to happen for ya!
Thomas - me too, ber is such a dreadful thing to have.
Gardener - no, not really. I would think the volunteers would be the strongest plants out ther.
Roasted - oh my, i've heard the weather in your area hasn't been favorable this year. Hopefully it will turn around for ya.
Granny - that was exactly what I was thinking had happened. I'll know more when the plants are removed.
Hannah - the jelly bean is superb, and has a sweetness to it.
Your tomatoes look great! Don't you wish they would get ripe already??? My "Little Helper" keeps checking the tomatoes....he says "eat, eat"
Oh your tomatoes look fantastic! So green and healthy. So glad that it wasn't BER on your Neves Azorean Red.
EG, your tomatoes look so good. I have 18 plants and have rooted 4 suckers that should be ready to go out soon. I keep telling myself that I can't have too many. I may be singing a different tune later. (smile)
Today I saw several more suckers that I want to prune and root. I can't help it!!
Hehe "Don't tell the wife." Hehehe... I've been planning on expanding the raised beds this fall, and let it slip to DH... "Oh, I hadn't mentioned that to you? Well, yea... I'm making more raised beds. Anyways..."
The plants are looking lovely, and I'm glad you don't have BER.
How tall are your trellis' for the Cherokee Purple?
Momma - they are about 5.5 feet tall.
I like your blog! Been reading for a little while and I'm already learning a lot! Question for you, my tomator plants look quite healthy, but they're just not setting fruit for some reason. All the flowers just drop off after bloom. Am I watering too little? The leaves actually all look green and lush, the plants are growing taller, just no fruits. Any idea? Thanks!
