A harvest is just around the corner

Jenn C and Gardener on sherlock street - welcome, and thanks for following the blog!

Since I didn't grow much of a cool season crop early this spring, it's been kinda tough watching everyone else getting to participate in Daphne's weekly harvest Monday. Sure, I grew a little bit of lettuce and onions, but my main focus went into the warm season garden this year.
Well, thanks to being able to get a jump on things, my harvest fortune is about to change! Yeehaw!

Photo below - these are straight eight cucumbers being grown in the 34 gallon swc, and should be ready to pick in about a week, I figure. The vines of the 12 total plants in it have climbed the trellis very well - reaching at least 5-6 feet so far. Blooms are all over the vines, and bees can be seen visiting them.

Photo below - the corn growing in swc's has reached about 7-8 feet tall now, and definitely is a sight to see. Since several ears are forming, I gave it a little boost by pouring 2 gallons of Miracle Gro soluble fertilizer into the reservoirs. I counted as least 16 ears forming on Saturday, and will keep an eye out for more.

Photo below - oh yeah....and one stalk has 2 ears on it. Man, that's a first for me! Maybe several more will do the same - as that would be sweet!

Photo below - the other day, Cynthia asked me how my sweet potatoes were doing....Well, here they are, and as you can see - they're doing quite well. The one on the left is the only slip that was grown from the potato started back in March, and slips from the other plants have now joined it. I sure hope they perform as well as last year, and anticipate at least 30 lbs this time. Although I can't seem to grow irish potatoes for nothing, sweet potatoes are no problem at all. These will be sprayed with spectracide throughout the growing season, as we certainly wouldn't want any bad bugs to mess things up....

In other news, there's no way I can show pictures of everything in the garden, because there's just too much out there. Of course i'll show the majority of stuff on a weekly basis, and will occasionally update you on things not frequently covered. As you can imagine, a few things aren't faring too well, and i'm probably gonna dedicate an entire post to current problems. However, it will probably be after i'm sure those particular plants don't make it.

Take care, and happy gardening!

EG

I'm sure that we will all be envious of your summer crops once the harvesting begins.

I can't belive that your corn is that tall already! Nice :)

Your corn looks fantastic, EG! I moved my sweet potatoes to a container on the front walk this year that has full 100% sun and the vines are running everywhere and spilling from the top of the pot to the ground. It's just beautiful, but this year I'm going to cut the runners so it can focus on the tubers. Someone told me to do this last year and I didn't. Figured I'd try it with at least one of the pots this year.

Everything is looking real good. I noticed on my tomatoes (I actually got some growing, will be doing a post soon) that The branches on some of the plants are sparse, maybe that is normal. I always through the plants are supposed to be real bushy and produce lots of blooms. I think next year I will try another location maybe more toward the frot of the garden and not so close to my 6 foot fench (the sun sets on that side). The tomatoes may need way more sun then they are getting. Oh well live and learn.

Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm intrigued by all your container growings. I plan to visit your garden often. Happy gardening!

Robin - I guess a little patience would go a long way right now, because it's just been so long before any harvests have happened. Yep, the corn is really tall now!

ribbit - thanks! Oh yeah...SP need lots of sunshine, and it sounds like yours are gonna be alot better this go around.

Cynthia - thanks! I have some tomatoes in part shade too, and hopefully they'll do something.

Gardener - you're welcome! Thanks for showing an interest in my daily activities....

Window on the Prairie - Thank you. Before long, we should be covered up in cucumbers.

Wow! Your corn is so tall! I am trying corn for the first time this year. When I was choosing seeds, I noticed that some seed catalogs groped the corn by if it got two ears or only one. Silly me, I figured I would get 4 or 5 ears per stalk. I guess it takes an awful lot of corn kernels to fill up a 6-gallon grain bucket. But hey, learning this stuff is part of why I'm doing this.
BTW, are sweet potatoes difficult to grow? My family loves them, so it would be cool to grow my own.

Eleanor - yeah, it towers over everything else in the yard! I'm not sure what determines if a stalk produces more than one ear, but I like it when it does!!! Oh, sweet potatoes are easy to grow, but they need LOTS of sunshine and warm temperatures.

Your corn is the star of the show right now. Looking good!

And you just reminded me I need to plant some pickling cucumbers. I'm trying the Armenian Yard Longs, but just in case they don't taste good, I want the picklers. I just have to figure out where I can put them.

Your garden is really off to a fast start this year. Cucumbers and huge corn already, must be doing something right :-)

If I didn't grow any spring crops I wouldn't be eating from the garden until July. Though once your cucumbers hit I'll be envious. I so love cukes and mine will be a while yet.
