Finally, my back issue is better, and the remnants of the recent flu bout is completely gone. You know what that means....It's building time! On Sunday morning at 7:30 I walked out to the garden area with Jude, and the temperature read 19 degrees. Perfect weather for working outside. WooHoo!!! Over the weekend I got the vinyl siding finished on the shed, another compost bin filled with leaves, and then decided to do something with the various pieces of scrap lumber out back. Although it isn't finished, I wanted to show you my new coldframe. I've got a little more trim work to do around the top and bottom side of the window, and also install some weather stripping in the various cracks. Here's a couple of pictures of it so far......
After looking at the remaining pieces of scrap lumber, I decided on building another one later! Heck, I've gotta do something with the other window, and a person can't have enough coldframes - especially someone that's planning on selling plants next year. Besides, I wouldn't want this little coldframe to be lonely. :-)
Take care, and happy gardening!
EG

19F is so not weather for working outside. In that weather I stay indoors and bundle up. Hot tea is good. Soup is better. Working outside while my fingers get numb and no longer work isn't so good. How do you hold a hammer when it is so cold?
That is one pretty little cold frame. I could use one about now to keep my chard growing for a while longer.
EG - glad you're feeling better - finally! You don't seem like the type of guy who likes being sidelined for so long at all. And you know I'm glad that Jude got to come inside for the night! I feel like I can sleep better now - LOL. I guess our GSD is such a big pansy that he shivers below 60 degrees and isn't a big fan of the dark or being alone. He's the polar opposite of our last GSD.
Hi EG!
I'm so glad to hear that you're feeling better... and all over the flu!
Love your cold frame!
Sounds like the shed is coming along!
So cold here in Wyoming... -6 this morning. Burr...
Merry Christmas!!!!
That's so thoughtful of you to make the cold frame a friend! Your tomatoes should be quite happy, too. Will you start them on some sort of stand at first when they're all short?
That cold frame is a great design. I may have to try that. I don't throw a single window away so I have plenty to make a few.
Aw, I bet Jude was thankful to be inside on such a cold night. So glad you are feeling better. Nice cold frame! And YES two is better than one.
That is a cool cold frame EG! The window angle will be great for catching the low sun during the fall, winter & early spring. I wish I had room to have four cold frames in a row and dedicated to them so I did have to move them... I can always dream. Good luck on cold frame number two.
Daphne - all of my outdoor projects are done between the months of October and April, and temperature is never a factor. I wear gloves when it's below freezing.
Kate - I literally pace the floors when cooped up all day. If not building something, I feel wasteful with my time. I'm glad you feel better about Jude's living conditions. Oh, there's no way i'd let anything happen to her, she's my buddy.
Toni - thanks
Stefaneener - I agree, wasn't that sweet of me? Ha! Hmm...I take it you've never seen my propagation systems? Oh...you're in for a treat! My chamber is the freakiest thing you've ever seen! LOL
L.D. - I can't wait to try it out, but it's gonna have a few more accessories !
Rachel - thanks, I feel much better.
Dan - thanks! I didn't follow a plan from the internet - just built it according to the measurements of the window. But...it's not finished yet! Ha!
That's a fine looking cold frame and will be even better with a matching mate! Good use of the recycled wood too.
Glad you are feeling better.
kitsapFG - Thanks, a few more additions to it, and it will be pretty dadgum good.
That's pretty cool EG..and will surely come in handy in the spring...Would you mind building me a few for good measure. Thanks. Maybe we should have a contest to see who can harvest the first tomato next year...although you would have an advance being further south.
I'm sure it will come in handy for hardening off plants with. Maybe some winter sowing, too. You will have to wait a good while on me building one for ya, because I have a long list to get done before spring. No more contests for me.....
Great looking coldframe. Mine are just the windows that sit on top of the beds. Not the best implemntation, but I'm not the builder you are.
Hehe, if I'm still out of work come spring, I may sell plants too, hehe.
Sinfonian - Thank you. I'm really sorry about your current situation.
