Ya know, I knew there were tubers in the containers, because they could be seen protruding from the soil. But how big/many were they? I had no earthly idea. Well, last weekend I decided to find out, by harvesting from only 1 of the 3 "earthtainer scrap pieces - turned into containers". The planters were filled with my homemade compost, which hadn't finished yet (mainly due to the pine needles within), but was the perfect growing medium for this planting. Sweet potato slips were planted the first week of June - making the planting about 104 days old as of 9/20/09. Jude gets in the video too, as you can imagine (the little stinker). For the record, the harvest total was 7 lbs., 11 oz., but that's not the most surprising part. I was shocked at what I found halfway through the container..... Enjoy!

Way cool, thanks for filming that. It makes me want to grow potatos!
That is quite a clump! Impressive!
All that from a continer. I'm trying that next June :-)
Thanks for the video.
Liisa
Wow, they were quite productive for you this season! I was going to grow these this year but I waited to long and would have had to order slips, which are $$$. Definitely will be sprouting some slips next season.
Awesome EG, I think I know how I should grow my sweets next year!
Karen - I'm glad you liked it!
Ginger - it sure was, and made my day.
Liisa - good to hear from you! It was a good harvest from the space, and will definitely happen again next year.
Dan - just start your own slips, it's quite easy.
Kelly - it worked for me, and should for you too!
I tried to grow sweet potatoes but our hot weather is just not long enough. Bummer because I absolutely love yams and sweet potatoes.
Good job, EG...great harvest! You'll probably get 25 pounds from those three containers! I might just have to try those in one of my whiskey barrels next year.
That clump you pulled made me squeal! My sp's didn't work out this year (I'm blaming Mel's mix & my late start), but your video has me all excited to try again! Thanks for sharing, EG.
Margaret - a warm climate sure makes them grow well, maybe you could create a makeshift greenhouse for them when cooler temps arrive?
Granny - thank you! 25 lbs. is possible, I guess...
Momma_S - I would think that they would do well in Mel's Mix.....hmm. All I did was water mine, as no fertilizer is required.
Way cool, my friend!!! Send me some sweet potato vibes. Mine will come out the week of our first frost.
ribbit - I'm glad ya liked the harvest video! Vibes? Shoot...all I did is water them occasionally. I hope yours do well for ya.
I am seriously jealous. I have a sweet potato in my window, but I don't know if it's going to last long enough to make slips.
How do you start your own?
That one bunch of sweet potatoes looked perfect. I wish I could grow sweet potatoes. I've heard that some varieties will grow up here in the land of cold weather, but I can't just buy a sweet potato and make my own slips. I'd have to buy the correct variety and slips cost way to much to ship. I can't believe how much they charge for them. I think it is tons cheaper just to buy them from the farmers' market. I noticed last weekend they just started to show up in some stands.
stefaneener - I'm sorry for your problems. I just suspend it in a glass of water, change the water out weekly, and they sprout.
Daphne - I was ecstatic when that bunch was pulled, as you can imagine. I'm not sure which variety grows well in the north, perhaps you could contact your local extension agent.
Awsome. I get a rush when I see root crops coming out of the ground because you never know how good it will be...or bad, like my white potatoes. Looking foward to seeing the rest of them.
Thanks, Cheryl. It was a pretty good harvest in my book.
Coming in late to the game, but that was fantastic! I'm only going to try one bin this year as an experiment. I kind of surfed into your blog today and I don't know where you live, but I'm in Mobile, Alabama and I think they'll do well here.
Also, just wanted to make a comment on your gorgeous adorably charming dog. I can't quite hear what the name is (June? Juke?) but I have a GSD/Lab mix who is just a big baby at heart.
Thanks for sharing!
