More blackberries

My evenings after work are completely filled with all kinds of tasks in the garden right now, and a schedule has to be followed to make sure nothing is neglected. Watering the entire garden on one day, and picking blackberries the next....Each seems to be a never-ending process right now, because as one is completed - the other is begging for attention. Anyway, today will be all about my wild blackberries.....

Photo below - the plump ones like this one are very sweet, and are always protected from direct sunlight. I say this, because the largest berries are always found under foliage. With around 30 years of blackberry picking experience under my belt, I learned this at any early age. We were always picking berries for my mother when I was a kid.......

Photos below - I really like finding clusters like these, because it doesn't take as long to get a gallon (but still takes 2 hours).

In other news, my good friend Toni has put a couple of videos on her blog, you should check them out! I always enjoy hearing how other people talk around the country, because the redneck language is prominent where I live. Ha!
In my garden, the watermelons have all reached the top of the 5 ft tall trellis. As soon as a couple of fruit have formed on each one, all future vine growth will be cut. That makes bigger melons, and I like that! Besides, granny is kicking my tail right now in the harvest weight category!
I'll shoot some videos of everything this weekend, and will also be making pickles, and canning the homemade sauerkraut, Yay, me!
Take care, and happy gardening!
EG

Yay, you, indeed.

I made a video in honor of you but can't figure out how to upload it to the computer. When I do, you can hear how us Californians talk.

Those berries look scrumptious.

Your berries are beautiful. Ours are runty in comparison. Can't wait to see the canning of the sauerkraut.

I hear you on the picking, the raspberries I picked last year took ages. Those berries certainly are pleasing to the eye.

Hi EG! Thanks for mentioning me in your blog post! I had such a fun time making those short little videos!

Oh so pretty! The wild ones growing in the back alley are just starting to bloom - DH was going to hack them back but I wouldn't let him - I want berries too now dang it. Course it's just a measly vine or two so there won't be many but hey - better then none and you can bet your bottom boot that he'll be eating them right along side me. X^D

I love your blackberry patch. I would love a wild patch to pick berries in. We do have wild blueberries on the back hill, but they are so tiny and sometimes hard to find. It takes forever to get a pint. When I was in western MA one weekend, I found some highbush blueberries in the wild. Now those are much easier to pick.

It must be a nice relief after a days work to just spend time in the garden.

All those lovely plants (esp. the blackberries) are doing pretty darn well. Must be due to their caretaker!

stefaneener - Oh goodie, I can't wait to see your video! Actually, I have been to California 6 times, while performing ammonia refrigeration service work.

ribbit - thanks. I'll be canning the sauerkraut today, and making pickles too!

Dan - thanks! It's alot of hard work, but worth it in the end.

Toni - Sure! I like trading stuff!

Just Jenn - tell hubs the root system of those you currently have, will send out new canes in the future - eventually expanding.

Daphne - Thank you! It's a really big patch - at least 1/4 acre. I've never seen wild blueberries before, but occasionally have to do some "gorilla harvesting" with other things I find.

waters_deep - It's only relaxing after bug picking, harvesting, and watering has been completed.(which is around 3 hours after I get home from work)

LOL - Oh we're well aware of what they do - blackberries are an invasive weed round here. The canes are actually growing out of the neighbor's back yard and under her fence. I'm not sure she even knows they're there. We share a back alley and they've snuck into it. Normally we hack them back so they don't take over the road but I talked him into keep a cane or two so we can have a little treat later this summer. THey're just starting to bloom. After that we'll cut them back -- again. ;^)

3 hours? That's about the same time I spend on mine actually, hehe. You have a very fine garden, I envy your space. Keep it up!

There's no way anyone is hearing me on video...lol! I don't want ppl laughing at my little kid voice with a mix of MI, TX, TN, and KY in it!

That is a lot of time in the garden. We do alot on the weekends, but not really much during the week. Ours just isn't that big...though big enough for us!
Have fun picking all those berries!

Boy, those blackberries sure look tasty. I'll have to keep my eye out for thick foliage to move to see if I can't find a cluster when it comes time to harvest. That's still months away though. Until then I'll live vicarously through you.

Don't I wish my evenings could be spent gardening. Well, sort of. Instead I'm spending evenings with my kids riding their bikes and making dinner etc.

Well, off to see Toni's videos. Thanks for sharing!

Here in England we are going to have a bumper year for blackberries! Ours are still small and green, but I think the very cold Winter we had has helped produce the fruit buds. Yours look wonderful!

Good for you, Matron! I hope your harvest is plentiful.
