Keeping corn from falling over

If you grow corn in the sfg, the shallow depth of soil isn't capable of supporting the stalks. Just a slight breeze will make it fall over, and that happened to me last year. Since the corn was getting pretty tall in the garden, I knew something had to be done quick - or history would repeat itself. Looking at my options, I chose to utilize the wire mesh of the trellises to attach some pvc pipe to. I mean....1/2" pvc is really cheap, and light - as well. With wire ties in hand, I proceeded to create a grid of sorts, with the pvc pipe - and leftover bamboo pieces.

Photo below - You can clearly see the green colored bamboo pieces that are attached to the pvc.

Photo below - Here's the corn growing in the earthtainer scrap pieces at the edge of the woods. My good friend Sinfonian had asked me how I was planning on using the cage to support the corn - well, here it is.

Other things happening in the garden.....This little pole bean vine has outgrown it's area! Sure, I could extend them even further - but how would I pick them? I think 6 ft. tall is enough....

Photo below - Look at this little beauty! I love squash.....it will be added to a dish of some kind in a few days....

Tomorrow, i'll show more on the shed construction ( which is really slow ). Oh! I almost forgot....my knee didn't bother me at all today. Thank goodness....

Take care, and happy gardening!

Oh squash! I love it! It looks so bright and happy and... eatable! ...and nom, nom, nom...

For a guy who gets a headache from big scientific words you sure are a smartie - look at the caged corn! I wish I had something like that. We had a thunder storm come through a few days ago with 60 mph headwinds. It blew my corn around like crazy and kinda flopped it over. I'm hoping it'll recover though it doesn't look too bad. ::fingers crossed::

I wish I had your climate! My plants are all flowering like mad but we're still a few weeks behind where you are. Lucky man!

If you had a trellis taller than 6' you wouldn't be able to pick it without a ladder. Six feet is plenty. Love the squash photo.

*whimper* Granny wants some crookneck squash. I don't even have blossoms yet.

Smarty pants, that's a pretty cool looking corn setup! We got a windstorm two nights ago, and my sugar snap peas are doing toe-touches. They're bent in half, but it doesn't seem to hurt them any....makes picking a bit difficult though.

Glad the knee didn't hurt you. I was up and down on the ladder yesterday, so mine is in pain today.

Jenn - You know I'm just playing with the whole "big word/headache" thing....Actually, for an ol' country boy, I'm quite educated. Hands off my squash! It's mine...heh.

Waters_deep - where are you located? Believe it or not, sometimes I wish I was just a little farther north. That way, I could grow everything at the same time.

Daphne - I agree, as it stands right now - i'll be the only one tall enough to pick the top growth.

Granny - Hee hee....♪♪You ain't got no squash...♪♪ You ain't got no squash..♪♪
Snap peas doing toe touches? Crap....that must've been some wind! Smarty pants, eh?

kelli - Thanks! Building this outdoor stuff ain't too difficult, it just takes some time....

Your corn is progressing nicely and the support system looks great. I have never grown corn, maybe next year. That squash is looking very tempting. I just plant my lone zuc today, it has blooms start with only 4 true leaves. I hope it is a sign of a bumper crop to come.

Located in lovely London, Ontario. My plants are just in the middle of the flowering part of the production cycle so I won't be seeing any major veg for a few weeks yet.

Excluding my lettuce and herbs lol

Thanks EG for the great post on proping up the corn. I love the PVC idea, though it gets lost in those beans, hehe. Great pics too. Thanks!

Last year my beans did the same thing. They just bunched up at the top trying to grow back down the other side. I just let the. Mess to clean up but I got tons of production up there (7 feet for me). I stood on the bed walls to harvest, hehe.

Your corn structure is a lot like my tomato "alleys." Seems to be working pretty well.

You and my husband would be fun building together. He's pretty precise.

I planted corn when I saw yours in the left-over SWC parts. Mine is all of three inches tall and yours is tasseling. Send a little of that magic over this way.
