Constructing a shed, part 6

The framing for the rafters and gable ends is finally complete. Whew....Kinda feel like I'm building another house...I'm really envious of "real carpenters" that have pneumatic nailguns, but will stick to my roots, I guess. Man....I could build all kinds of stuff if I had one of those!

Anyway, let's talk about the photos below....

This photo clearly shows the cripple studs above the door header, and also the framing for the gable end. The 12" x 12" square that I created in the center will facilitate a ventilation louvre (sp?) later, and there's another one in the opposite gable end. That will hopefully keep it from getting so hot in the summertime. Of course, they will be blocked during the cold months, because my plants will be propagated in here. Yeah....this will be EG's mancave. Ha!

The ceiling joists should be enough to keep the walls from spreading outward, as I just didn't see a need to install collar ties. At the right side of the picture below, you can see some pieces of 2x4 wedged in between the rafters - at an angle. These are called blocker boards, and keep critters from entering the building where the roof and walls meet. We have lots of squirrels!

Here's a view of the entire construction so far. With just a few more studs to beef up the corners a bit, it'll be ready for the OSB. I'll have to make a jig of some kind to hold the heavy sheets up, while nailing them into place. It's pretty rough work on a 1-man construction crew......(not whimpering!) The walls will be checked for plumb again, before installing the OSB (and this is critical).

Ok....it'll be 2-3 weeks before I get back on this project, because there's too many berries to pick right now!

Take care, and happy building!

Whew EG, I've seen enough trusses to know you really like overbuilding things, MUAHAHAHA, man cave is right. Trusses around here for homes are built with 2x4s and you look like you used 2x6s. hehe. You da Man!

Are you going to drill ventilation holes in those bird blocks? I had to do that after the fact with dozens of bird blocks in my house because it wasn't ventilating properly. Very time consuming.

It's looking amazing man, and I love how tall it will be for storage in the rafters. Very good use of space.

Oh, and beg, bribe or coerce your kids to help you at the very least hold up the OSB to nail it in place. Sheesh!

Now you just need to run electricity, water and cable out there for your man cave to be complete, hehe!

I sure hope your surgery goes better than planned and you can build things again. I'll miss seeing all you do.

I can't believe you don't have a gun and some air hose with all the projects you scheme up, thats just silly. Shed is llokin good, maybe I will show this to hubby with an elbow poke or two. 8)

(I missed the bit about surgery, but good luck!)

Sinfonian - indeed, I did use 2x6's for the rafters. I want it to be strong, should a tree limb fall on it later. No boys here to help me, they're elsewhere for the summer. No, I won't drill any holes in the blocker boards....there's gonna be a vent in both gable ends. That will let air flow thru the building all the time. Electricity will definitely be ran out there, but nothing else.

Kelly - I just use primitive tools to build everything (except for the circular saw). Thanks for the compliment!

That is the sturdiest piece of construction I think I've ever seen. You rule, EG!

EG's mancave is coming along nicely. Looks like we should go into the contracting business together.

Thanks, peel!

Dan - Oh...I bet we would make a great team!

Gotta love a man who can both overengineer a shed and realize that berries are more important!

Stefaneener, that was funny. Yup. EG knows his priorities.

EG, as to your question (on my blog) about what we used for siding, I forgot to mention the Hardie board was applied over 7/16 OSB sheathing.

Hi EG. Is there a part 7 where you complete the shed? You make it so straight forward that it seems like something I could get my Mr. to do. Hope ur keeping well.

Oh!Canada - I stopped blogging about it. Sorry.... :(
