This first picture is of a wild plant called pokeweed, which is a part of southern cuisine. It has toxins that can kill mammals (humans too), and is not recommended for consumption by anyone. Still...we eat it anyway. Ha! We call it poke salad, and have been cooking it for years. Momma showed me how to prepare it, and I'm the only one that prepares it these days.
Here's a photo of a wild blackberry blossom, and this makes EG very happy! Woo Hoo!
Although the pictures can't really show how massive the patch is - believe me...it's gonna produce at least 20 gallons of berries this year.
Man.....I'm pumped! I'd really like to have 20 gallons preserved, but I struggled to pick 8 last year....The berries are only available for about 3 weeks, then they're gone for the year. Rather than being over-confident (which I'm guilty of sometimes!), I'm sticking to my story of 12 gallons total. I can definitely meet that goal. You'll see the pictures!
In other news, we went fishing today, and caught some pretty good keepers! Although we lost 3 getting them to the boat, we still managed to come home with 7 fish. When Lin, Kim, Gracie, and Chris come next weekend (family), deepfried fish will be on the menu one evening for sure!

Love your blackberry patch! I've got a volunteer that I've been leaving alone, I can't decide if I should yank it or not. I think of your patch and how lovely it would be to pick 'em this summer right in my own back yard.... hope you get your full 12 gallons!

What a beautiful blossom. Reminds me that I need to get out back and rip out the dead canes that I cut down last year. I still need to remove them. I keep forgetting to go back there.
Go for the 20 man! Shoot for the moon! I am just hoping for enough for blackberry jelly all year next year! My mom just made more of it from frozen juice. So tomorrow I'll have my first PB&J in two months, hehe.
Jenn - 12 gallons will definitely be out there waiting to be picked, let's just see if I can get that many.
Sinfonian - no real concern on the poke weed...We've been eating it for years. It must be prepared correctly, though! I'll be doing good to get 12...there's no way I could get 20 by myself. Why don't you come down here and help me? Ha.
Wow 20 gallons? If you actually did that much and not 12, that would be more than a quart to eat a week. I'd have trouble eating that many blackberries.You probably get help though.

We eat the poke salad too...mix it up in the turnips/mustards/ collards or stir fry it (after boiling and poring off the water) with onions, bell peppers and scrambled eggs. Them's good eats to coin an EG phrase.

We have pokeweed down here too! I've heard of people eating pokesalad but I've never had it myself. You're going to have to do a lesson on how to prepare it :-) That would be a cool video!
You're going to have blackberries running out of your ears! I love them myself and like to make cobblers and jam out of them.
