Pssst....It's plantin' time!

To get ready for the upcoming planting of the wife's pole beans, I went ahead and fastened these 2 foot long pieces of bamboo along the top of a short trellis. Surprisingly, they don't move at all when attempting to wiggle them a little bit. Whoever invented cable ties is a rich man, I bet! I planted four squares of beans this evening, and his trellis should be completely covered with foliage in about a month. My plan is to plant one side now for eating, then the other three at a later time for canning. This is gonna be alot of beans! Ha!

However, doing this while your dog is looking at you like this the entire time is really difficult! I wish I had half the energy that Jude has. Her and her stick.......heh. She's a stinker! Every bamboo piece I pulled from the bag was just another stick to play with, from her point of view.

While trying to catch a frisbee in mid-air later, she ran through one of my blueberry bushes. Yep, the largest branch was snapped off completely. UGH! There's about 50 blueberries lost for the year....

Also, since some of the stuff in cell packs had germinated already, 4 squares of boston pickling cucumbers were planted. Tomorrow evening after work, i'll try to do some inter-planting with corn, squash, and okra. This is gonna be really interesting, and no grids will be in place. Instead, the method used will be to just stick seedlings half way between the cole crops currently growing in the garden. Pretty intensive, but they'll only be cramped like that for about 2-3  weeks. By that time, all of the cole varieties will be harvested. Yeah, I know....pretty messed up. Ha!

The heirloom tomatoes were also planted into the earthtainers! Finally....my tomato propagation is over with for a while. Of course there's 13 seedlings in the chamber that will need nurturing for at least 4 weeks, but they are only backup plants. (Better Boy) As long as the heirlooms do well, the others won't be needed. Whew... I feel better already.

Take care, and happy gardening!

EG

I love zip ties! I can't wait to see your pole beans in full growth.

Liisa, I like 'em too. They're so versatile. This is gonna be a big year for beans around here!

I've always done the bush beans, but I've read the harvest is longer with the pole. I think I'll give those a try this year. If I copy your idea with the bamboo poles it would drive the squirrels nuts. They climb down from the tree and run across the top of the fence.

Cheryl - we only grow pole beans (green) down here, and they produce like crazy. I hope the bamboo sticks help with your squirrel problem - I've got tons of squirrels, too!

Hehe, my problem with zip ties is they're one and done... I like twist ties better because you can re-use them. Tough to get them as tight though.

Question, do you have a pressure canner or are you going to pickle them? If I had a canner, I'd canner in the morning... hehe, I mean I'd grow green beans this year. I like canned green beans, so sue me.

Sorry to hear about your blueberry bush. Bad Jude! Or bad throw EG...

So, where are the pics of the tomatoes in their new homes?

Aw, cute puppy, despite the blueberry-bush-breaking-thing. My little "dustmop with legs" keeps me company when I'm playing outside, too...

Have you looked at the weather? You may have more yukky stuff coming your way pretty soon... Hope all stays well if you do.

Sinfonian - Indeed....I do have a pressure canner. I can't blame Jude on the damage....she only went to where I threw it. I'll try to get some pics of the toms later, they're a little camera shy right now.

sb - I really like the "dust mop with legs" description. As far as the weather forecast, I only saw lots of rain predicted, with no low temps to speak of.

I always get a little doggy damage in my garden too. The dog is worth it.

Oh I love beans. How lucky to have room for so many! I was hoping to can some for the first time this year. I bet you have a great method / recipe! Hope you share when you get around to harvesting later on.

Jude is a cutie-pie. I think she's probably worth at least 50 blueberries. ;^)

Daphne - I agree, a little damage from Jude isn't too bad. She's just excited to get out of her pen.

Jenn - I've never canned green beans before, but have plenty of people in the family that have. Oh....we're gonna do alot of them!
Ha! Yeah, she's definitely worth 50 blueberries.
