The garden on 4/25/09

Man....the cole crop is gettin' down with it's bad self! Even though everything is showing lots of damage from the recent hailstorm, most things should mature over the next 2-3 weeks. Woot!

Photo below - here's the broccoli section, with some volunteer lettuce mixed in. Around three of the broccoli plants have decent sized heads formed already, and hopefully we can have some for dinner in a couple of weeks.

Photo below - Here's my lettuce and spinach. Some will be harvested in a day or two for a nice salad. To the left, you can see some squash already in it's place, with the tomato cage around it.

Photo below - Here's all six of the squash plants. I have zucchini in the back, and crookneck in the front. Six plants in a 4' x 6' area should do well. If you'll recall, last year I only got 4 zucchini from 4 stinkin' plants! Since the drainage problem has been corrected, we'll have lots of zucchini this year!

Photo below - the cabbage section, that still likes about 4 weeks from maturing. Since the corn was interplanted with them, i'll water heavily every 2 days, and water with Miracle Gro weekly.

Photo below - There's my 7 little boston pickling cucumber seedlings doing nicely. There's 7 cross country cucumbers on the other side of the trellis - planted behind the cabbage. This trellis will be covered with foliage in a few weeks. A total of fourteen plants should provide a big harvest for pickles!

Photo below - a closeup shot of the corn interplanted with the cabbage.

Photo below - closeup shot of some zucchini.

Photo below - Here's one of my volunteer lettuce that will be harvested in a day or two. It almost looks too pretty to eat!

Photo below - another volunteer, that will be added to the first salad of 2009.

That's it for the garden this week.

Take care, and happy gardening!

You can really see the interplanting at work. I am so impressed how the beans have done so well shooting up under that monster broccoli. When I tried to do that with radishes, I lost them until they shot up flowers for seed. You have done so well with it. I can't wait to see how it turns out.

I really hope your cool weather crops mature in a month. They sure wouldn't here. I bet they do for you!

I'm envious of your brassicas. I don't think mine have much of a chance this year, the seedlings were so leggy and puny. I learned from my mistakes though...better luck next year, I hope. I'll be happy when my gardens look as full as yours. It's hard being a northerner and several weeks behind in the spring!

All your plants look great. I especially like the broccoli. My plants are still so small. But with the heat, they are getting bigger.

Thanks Daphne! With those warm temps of late, your plants will be huge in no time.

Very nice! We're eating quite a lot of greens that wintered over. Everyone could use more volunteers, I'm sure! ;)

Welcome to my blog, Risa! Oh yes...the volunteer veggies are a definite plus. We can't get enough of the lettuce!
